Experiencing Great Love

I first met Michael Okoronkwo in June of 2014 when we both attended Summer Scholars Program at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Both Michael and I have the same aspiration of being a physician who will provide medical care for the underserved communities in the US and abroad. We attended the same classes together every day, and we got to know each other even better when we were assigned to the same clinical experience/problem-solving small group. Through our conversations, I learned of his unique background. He was one of the five children raised by a single mother. Both of his parents came from Nigeria and settled in New Orleans, Louisiana. Because his mother had to work long hours away from home to support the family, Michael had to grow up quickly to help take care his brothers and sisters. Growing up in the city of New Orleans, he experienced poor living conditions of the inner city and oftentimes inadequate public education that geared toward educating African-American children. Furthermore, he shared with me his encounter with gang and drug related violence. From his perspective, Michael felt that children who grew up in the city faced various challenges as they lack positive role models or normal family lives. I could sense pain and despair in his voice as we continued to have conversations off and on after classes.Read more...
