Soft Blankets Warm Hearts in Blistering Cold

On January 27, a snow blizzard hit the Northeast. New Jersey was lucky to avoid the forecasted historical blizzard and only received two to ten inches of snow. However, the frigid low temperature really endangered the well-being of homeless people. In Newark, homeless people usually sleep on the streets or inside Penn Station. Trains were canceled due to the blizzard forecast, and Penn Station was shut down. In consideration for the homeless, the City of Newark designated JFK Recreation Center as the temporary emergency shelter. The day before the snowstorm, 186 homeless people stayed there and 200 were expected on the 27th. Jocelyn Gilman, Red Cross Executive Director of Northern NJ, urgently asked Tzu Chi Mid-Atlantic Regional Office to provide 150 blankets for these homeless people.Read more...
