On July 19, the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) awarded “Special Consultative Status” to the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, an acknowledgement of its outstanding charity and medical work across the world. ECOSOC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It made the announcement of the award at its meeting on Monday morning, 19 July, 2010, New York time.

Organizations that have this special status can attend meetings of the Council of ECOSOC and circulate statements. The council recognizes the Foundation’s work in charity and medical work in more than 70 countries around the world. For example, in the aftermath of recent earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and Sichuan and the southeast Asian tsunami, Tzu Chi helped to rebuild the lives of people with the spirit of Great Love.

In future, the Foundation will take part in meetings of ECOSOC to provide inputs. At the same time, its charity work around the world will receive the assistance and necessary protection of the organs of the United Nations.

Master Cheng Yen, the founder of Tzu Chi Foundation, in her speech, sent a message to the volunteers around the world: “Tzu Chi volunteers have a responsibility to people in every country. They have a mission to help those who suffered, wherever they are. Through compassion and kindness, they embody the spirit of Great Love of the Buddha and carry with them the mission to spread this love all over the world.”
